THE BAY TREE AND THE BAMBOO

The 14th februar 2016, during the first Sunday of lent, an old time manifestation in Varignano in the hamlet of Romarzollo of Arco, marks the end of carnival.

The young people of the hamlet build bamboo pyramids which are charged of decorations, the so-called “carnevali”, and walk through Varignano’s streets; little boys and girls are in the front of them with branches of bay tree, which are decorated with coloured eggshells, which are symbol of fertility and sparklers. The parade is accompanied by folk songs, it reaches the “Tiera” bump, place where the carnivals are burned. During the fantastic bonfire “grostoi e vin brulé” (carnival knots and mulled wine) are served.

This event underlines and remembers the bond between the ground and the population.
